How-to: Score Free Stars on Ice Tickets (2009 edition)

How-to: Score Free Stars on Ice Tickets (2009 edition)

Note from Ice Mom: Today is the first time that all Rinkformation blogs will be about the same topic. Ice Coach, Ice Girl, Synchro Mom and I will all write about the same thing, but from our own perspectives. Check out their posts today, too!

Not to brag or anything, but last year I scored four free Stars on Ice tickets for myself and my family. I also scored a set of four tickets for another family.

How did I swing that one? I’d love to tell you it was strategy and skill,  but you all know that would be a total lie. It was more like a series of happy accidents SOI was scheduled to come to a town near mine. Ice Coach had volunteered to put up posters in our area rinks and was in touch with the promotions gal at the SOI venue. The promoter asked if Ice Coach knew anyone who sewed figure skating dresses.

It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it?

Ice Coach gave the gal my contact information and pretty soon the promoter and I had planned a presentation I would give to 300 Girl Scouts about figure skating dresses, fabric, crystals, tights, and practice pants.  At the end of the phone call, she asked me if I knew of any really successful local figure skaters who could talk to the Scouts about her training and lifestyle.

Why, yes, I do know a kid who fits that profile. Not to give too many details, but this skater had gone to Jr. Nationals and placed very well. I called the kid’s parents and they were on board, too.

We were able to find seats very, very close to center ice. Ice Girl also received a poster of the SOI skaters signed by the whole cast, too. I’m telling you: I scored.

Was it worth it? I bet my tickets were worth $50 each. That’s $200 for my family (including Ice Grandma) and $200 for the other family. We were able to find great seats and even watch the pre-show warm up. If you can get in to see the warm-up, do it. The house lights are up and the figure skaters speed around one another. It’s like club ice on steroids.

Would I pay for Stars on Ice out of my own wallet? You know I’m cheap, so writing this kills me. Yes. If SOI is in a town near you, I recommend that you shake the loose change out of the couch cushions and buy the best seats you can afford.  Watching Stars on Ice is different from the home viewing experience. Watching figure skating on your wide-screen TV while you sit on the sofa and steal drinks from your husband’s soda is passive viewing.

Watching SOI from the good seats, close to the ice with no hockey glass between you and the action is thrilling. The whole point of watching high-level figure skating is to get the feel; of it. You can’t feel the rush of wind when the skaters whizz by  if you’re sitting in the UU section in the balcony behind a pillar. You can’t feel the chill from the ice at home wrapped in your Snuggie. Your flat-screen TV can’t allow you to feel the thrill of watching a pairs skater lift his  partner way over his head and throw her while he speeds past you. That’s active viewing.

So, don’t go the cheap route and buy the seats in the nosebleed section where you’ll need to share a pair of binoculars to see the action. If that’s your plan, save your money, stay home, and rent a movie.

Bottom line. If the Stars on Ice tour is coming to a city that’s a day trip from your house, go ahead and spend the money on good seats. Plan on spending between $200 and $350 for a family of four to attend. The extras like signed figure skater photos and full-color programs are nice, so you might want to budget about $30 for one of each. My plan is to eat before coming to the ice arena so I don’t spend another $40 on four hot dogs and four drinks.

Have you been to Stars on Ice? What did you think? Is it worth the money? Would you go again? How about two years in a row? (You can tell me how jealous you are that I got free seats last year, too. I promise I won’t gloat too much.)

Do you have a question for Ice Mom or the Advisory Board? Do you have an idea for a post you’d like to see? Are you a figure skating expert and want to appear on the Wednesday Ask the Expert feature? That’s great! Send me an e-mail! icemom.diane@gmail.com

I’ve gone to Disney on Ice every year since I was 6- and have sat in every seating allocation known to mankind. I agree wholeheartedly that it is ALWAYS shelling out more for better seats. At Cats, sit on the aisle, at Phantom centre front, for Ice shows you want to be down in the thick of it, freezing your butt off.

And $30 for merch? Cheap! I expect to spend $20 on a program, $20 on a show mug, plus $15 for a poster or $40 for a show t-shirt. (This is why theatre is a very expensive hobby).

Another hint for getting free tickets- if you know ANYONE involved in a show, in ANY capacity (serious. I scored house seats to Phantom through a dressing assistant) it doesn’t hurt to ask if they can access house seats or get a special friends/family ticket rate. I’m going to Mamma Mia on cast tickets, Fame I have house seats an I’ve scored stacks of merch just by asking around.

My dd and I have not been to SOI yet. We have tickets for the St.Paul show this year! We have been to Disney on Ice and there is something to be said about seeing skaters live rather than on TV.

Talk about timing! Stars on Ice was just here in Orlando this past Saturday (April 3) and heck yeah, we all went! The rink bought blocks of tickets, so ours were $36 each. Yes, there were $75 each tickets, but being frugal and all . . .

It was way worth it!! We saw the recent Olympians and it was such a thrill! It is nothing like watching on TV, and my two skater girls were glowing by the end! You just can’t get that from the TV!

In 2008 we got free box seats for Stars on Ice (a gift from my husband’s employer who was the owner of the box). Our daughter chose, instead, to sit with her synchro team (who had also scored free tickets) in the regular seats. After the show we called our daughter and her friend (who was with her high school-aged sister) to arrange for a meeting location. They informed us they were rinkside so we made our way down to the ice too. As we approached the ice the kids were being led away with a group of other fans by someone with credentials, so we followed them not knowing where we were going. They took us thru the hockey team entrance, thru a back hallway and into the hospitality room for our local professional hockey team. The room was huge and decorated in a Northwoods Lodge theme with a bar, pool tables, video games, radio broadcast booth, and lots of overstuffed lounging furniture. There was a huge catered spread which was prepared using Smucher’s products. By this point our kids were seperated from us and we were trying to contact them by cell phone. They were checking credentials at the door and since we didn’t have any, they let us in because our kids had apparently been given backstage passes. We were treated to a feast and open bar and were told it would be about 20 minutes before the skaters arrived for the meet and greet. We were totally shocked! We finally found our credentialed kids and they were out of their minds with excitement. My daughter’s skating idol had always been Sasha Cohen and now she was going to meet her. When the stars came out they were unbelievably gracious and encouraging. (I can’t believe they were so genuine considering they must do this in every city they visit.) The girls were wearing their team synchro jackets and one of the Canadian women pair skaters recognized that and talked to the girls about the fact she started out by skating “precision” in Canada. I was surprised by how small the women skaters were! They made my petite 10-year-old look like a giant. They got special collectible programs for their autographs, their pictures were taken with the skaters (thanks to a teammate with a pic phone because we weren’t planning on this) and lots of memories. Still don’t know how they got the backstage passes but it was worth being 2 hours late for work. Thank you, Target, for understanding this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

PrettyBowtie. You are amazing. It’s a shame we live so far away (you in Oz, me in the U.S.) because I would totally be your friend and mooch tickets from your sources, too.

    You inspire me, PrettyBowtie.

    Hey, Sk8nLane!

I’ve never been to Disney on Ice and I don’t have tickets to SOI this year. My plan is to wheedle my mom into taking Ice Girl and me. My husband is graduating with his MBA in two weeks and Ice Grandma is looking for a gift to give Ice Dad.

Oh, Sk8nLane. I’m going to hell, aren’t I? I’m going to try to get her to buy us SOI tickets for I.G. and me instead of something that Ice Dad would want. Ooh. Not very nice.

Ah, well! At least it’ll be warm!

That’s it, Denise. You win the SCORE contest. I can’t imagine how thrilled Ice Girl would have been to meet Yuka Sato backstage. She has a signed, framed photo of Yuka in her room and talks about her skating all the time.

I can’t imagine how it would have been for I.G. to actually meet her. How unforgettable and inspiring. You and your daughter are so lucky.

LOL, I have to laugh. About 4 years ago we went to SOI because DS was begging me to take him ice skating for years. I figure if he’d like to watch ice skating, just as good as being on the ice right? I was being a nice mom!

Our (not at that time) club was there passing out Learn to Skate flyers. Oh look I said to myself, I don’t need to get on the ice with him if he takes group lessons…

Flash forward four years, thousands of dollars a year later…those were the most expensive nosebleed SOI tickets I’ve ever purchased…

Have we ever been to SOI?…yes, Was it worth it?… all kidding aside… most definitely…

Wow, Barbara! You SCORED, too! I’d pay $36/ticket to go. Very smart: club bought tickets in a block. Must mention it to our club. SOI is coming to a city 2.5 hours from here. If Plan A doesn’t work (Ice Grandma popping for the tickets), maybe Plan B will (club purchasing a block).

Ice Dad said the only way he’d pay $85 for a ticket is if Katarina Witt were there. He has this crush thing on her. *eye roll*

    Hey, sk8rmom.p!

What a very smart figure skating club you have. PR geniuses.

But yeah. That brings up a good point: would you have begun this knowing where it would all lead and how much money it would take? Hmm. Not sure. It sounds like a post, though, doesn’t it? Something along the lines of: Knowing what you do now, if you had to do it all over, would you put your kid on the ice?

Maybe Thursday. I haven’t written my sewing post yet…:)

I think my daughter was more overwhelmed than impressed at the event. It took a couple of days for it all to soak in. At the meet and greet, it was the parents who were the most impressed. It’s one of those serendipitous things that you can’t believe actually happened. I probably won’t be able to ever go to SOI again because I couldn’t possibly top that experience. We once had 3rd row tickets to a Springsteen concert and now I don’t feel a need to go again because nothing can beat my memory of that evening either.

    Hi, Denise.

Isn’t it funny how parents/kids react? I kind of agree with you – any other SOI experience would be a let down.

So, when your daughter’s synchro team gets their free tickets and you get your box seats, I’ll help you out, Denise. Allow me to take those tickets off of your hands. I’ll even let you keep Ice Dog and bring you a DVD to watch while we’re sitting through that miserable, let-down SOI experience.

That’s what friends are for, right? :)

We just recently got back from seeing Cuties Ice Dreams on April 1st. Being that this was a much smaller show than SOI we go the opportunity to sit in the front row of a small rink. For $25 a ticket it was VERY thrilling and very cool. We got to see the skaters faces, hear the edges and see the patterns their skates make on the ice! I felt like I was watching my own kid during a FS session. I choose this venue for two reasons…cheaper and Johnny Weir. Another nice touch…they asked about 100 local skaters to perform a number during the show! These kids had a chance to rehearse and hang out with the cast. A dream come true for many of these kids. If Cuties Ice Dreams comes near you, I would go. Get there early because seating is general admission.

Icemom–sounds like a great post! I was told it was expensive, “I know” I thought, but really I didn’t!! LOL

Thomahawkenator that sounds really fun. I read a little about it, but didn’t really understand it. From your description, it sounds really great!

DS wants to go to SOI this year. We’ll see…I agree with the previous posters, that good seats are worth it. We do it for every other thing we go to. But gee whiz…. I’m with Icemom and “cheap”…

We went to SOI 3 or 4 years ago and sat in the nosebleed seats. We had a great time but honestly I didn’t know what I was missing. Two years ago, Mirai Nagasu skated in a show at our local rink (my daughter was in a number too) and it was breathtaking to be so close to someone skating so fast and so well!!! So last year, Worlds was in LA and we went to everything!!!! The most amazing thing was when we went to the practices the day before opening ceremonies and my daughter and I were right next to the ice when the Japanese men were practicing!!! That absolutely took the cake!!! We alternated events between the cheap nosebleed seats I had bought and the box that my husband’s company had (but no one wanted during the day for the short programs). We were JUST debating whether or not to see SOI this year, so thank you for reminding me that YES, it is better to see skating live than on TV and YES, it is worth the money to sit close. That’s what credit cards are for!!!!

    Hey, Helicopter.

Yeah, it seems like everyone I know is involved in this blogging thing with me! I tell you, Heli, it started completely organically.

I told Ice Girl I was moving blogs and showed her the theme.

    “I want one,” she said.

    Um. O.K. Er,well, uh. I suppose…

So I told Ice Coach that Ice Girl would be blogging.

So I told Synchro Mom that Ice Girl and Ice Coach would be blogging with me.

Before she could say much else I said, “Look. I have blue, Ice Coach wanted purple, Ice Girl took red. You get green. Sorry. That’s all there is left. Deal with it, sister.”

I suppose its good I don’t have any other friends! :)

when going to the ticketmaster website via stars on ice site there are a bunch of boxes for ticket selections, use the “Entertainment book offer” when searching for tickets and it will show the discount. please please don’t pay for the coupon on ebay! there may be better deals, I haven’t searched for other coupon codes.
