Ask the Expert: Champion Cords Inventor Sheila Thelen

This week’s Ask the Expert guest is PSA master rated coach and inventor of Champion Cords, Shelia Thelen and Ice Coach. Thelen invented the Champion cords in 2003 when she was the Skating Director at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center in Stillwater, Minn. Her inspiration was a student who struggled with the single Axel.

Thelen nearly shouted at the kid: I’m going to tie your left hand and left foot together, so you are forced to move – as a unit.

That’s how she invented the Champion Cord. It’s evolved from a section of bungee cord swiped from the hockey locker room to a cord with a handle, a removable clip, and an instructional DVD.

The skater went on to land 10 Axels in that lesson. “Now I know where my left foot goes in midair,” the skater said.

The audio interview lasts about 20 minutes. I am grateful to Ice Coach for asking questions from a coaching perspective. Because of Ice Coach, I learned things that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

I invite you to ask Sheila your own questions in the comments. Sheila has a day job, like so many of us do, so she’ll probably respond to you later in the evening.

Reader niuiceprincess e-mailed me this question:

Can you please ask Sheila how would the champion cords help me with my scratch spin? And how do I start using them? I do have a pair already but the thought of bringing them to the ice freaks me out. How do I get used to them….should I start with using them with stroking, spirals etc before using them for the scratch spin? Thanks :)

    Hi Sheila,

I have a pair of champion cords already but I still haven't had the guts to use them. I mainly bought them to help with my scratch spin as I've seen it done on the demo dvd. I'm too nervous to get on the ice with the cords on. How should I start? Should I do some Moves first before using them for spins. Thanks.

    Hi Sheila,

Would you recommend that skaters first use the cords under the supervision of a coach? Or is there enough information on the DVD for a skater to use the cords during their own practice, specifically for getting the legs crossed in the air during double jumps?

    Thanks.

  • Carly

    Hi Sheila,

Would you recommend these cords for helping with double axel timing, getting the correct free-leg position on the take-off of the double axel, and to stop skaters collapsing on jump landings? Can you recommend any specific excercises to help skaters get the 'feel' of the double axel?

    Thank you!
